Spidsgatter Pax
On August 19, 2007 Kaci Cronkhite became Captain and new owner of Pax, a 1936 Danish Spidsgatter. This photo gallery illustrates and documents the lessons learned as Pax is worked on, sailed and used for education as in the International Women Sailing Network. Mast Refinishing 2012 (3)
Derk Wolmuth built a gorgeous bird's mouth design Fir mast for Pax in British Columbia. Fifteen years later... it's time for new varnish. -
Starboard Cabin Bunk (6)
After the successful review and healthy check out of starboard planks below waterline and in preparation for Wooden Boat Festival, I decided to replace the fir ceilings on starboard side. With the ceilings begun, I decided to move forward finishing a small bulkhead and bunk too. Diana Talley taught me to pattern and began doing more work myself! -
Summer 2011 Haulout (9)
Pax was hauled out next to Taku Marine, the boatshop of Diana Talley. Eric "Moose" Wilson replaced one short plank, reefed and corked. I worked with Diana and two female boatschool graduates to complete deck, bottom, and topside maintenance. -
Bulkhead and Port bunk finish work (6)
The marine ply bunk, shelf and temporary bunks worked well during sea trials and with friends aboard this past 6 months, so I worked with Diana Talley to use photos from the fire (original interior), my trip to Denmark and our own combination of function and beauty, for her finish work on the facing and curves and new port bunk. Wana, is the wood used on the facing and new bunk. The ceilings are the original Fir used by Derk Wolmuth. I planed them and revarnished them before Diana reinstalled at new lengths. -
First Sails & Festival (8)
We got in 4 lovely sails August and September before the weather turned. The main track cars are still sticking, so we kept one reef and Pax still takes off like a quarter horse. 7.2 knots in 10 knots of wind. Comfortable and fast. -
Varnish and new bunk (5)
Dianna Denny returned from her ocean voyage just in time to hop aboard Pax and start the summer varnish project. While she varnished outside, Diana Talley installed a new bench to starboard, so people can sit below during Wooden Boat Festival. Thanks Dianna's! -
Chart Table, bulkheads & hardware (9)
Diana Talley nails it again with a beautiful new chart table, engine panel, bulkhead, teak engine box cover that also serves as a seat. Outside, I installed the rigging hardware. -
Cockpit. Engine. Rigging & Sails. (9)
Mast and standing rigging installed. Boom varnished and prepared for new main. Cockpit and new cabin sole finished. Engine recoupled, hoses replaced, new racor and strainer, almost ready to run. -
